Ceramic Fiber Board Rigid Insulation Selection for Furnace Applications
Old Wang hears from many furnace engineers that using ceramic fiber boards (CFB) often leads to issues like poor insulation, unstable high-temperature performance, and high costs with poor actual benefits. Today, I’ve compiled real-world experience to break down how to select materials appropriately for actual furnace conditions and avoid common pitfalls.
1. Match Material to Furnace Conditions
The selection of rigid insulation boards for furnaces begins with the furnace type. For example:
- Cement kiln high-temperature zones: CFB’s fire resistance (≥1450°C) and thermal stability (≤1000°C/h temperature change) are critical. However, in practice, cement kilns experience large temperature fluctuations, leading to micro-cracks in CFB over time, reducing insulation efficiency. Recommend using high-density CFB (≥1200 kg/m³) with aluminum content ≥30%, as aluminum-based materials have lower thermal expansion coefficients at high temperatures, improving crack resistance.
- Steel ladle pouring furnaces: CFB must resist high-temperature shock and chemical corrosion. Factory case studies show that aluminum-magnesium (Al-Mg) based CFB effectively resists slag corrosion, but its cost is as high as 1200 RMB/m², suitable for high-end steel plants. Ordinary aluminum-based CFB (Al system) costs around 600 RMB/m², suitable for mid-to-low-end steel ladles.
2. Real-World Pitfalls in Selection
- Avoid ignoring temperature gradients: CFB’s thermal conductivity is 0.12 W/m·K at room temperature but drops sharply to 0.05 W/m·K above 1200°C. However, uneven furnace temperature distribution causes large cold-hot interface differences, leading to cracking. Recommend increasing insulation thickness at the furnace inlet ( 20%) or using a double-layer CFB structure (inner high-temperature refractory, outer CFB).
- Avoid ignoring mechanical stress: Furnace door openings, vibrations, and other mechanical stresses cause localized stress in CFB. Factory practice shows that steel mesh reinforcement of CFB can extend its lifespan, but the mesh should not directly contact high-temperature zones to prevent oxidation.
- Avoid ignoring cost-benefit balance: CFB prices range from 500 RMB/m² (low density) to 2000 RMB/m² (high-density Al-Mg). However, high-density CFB offers more stable insulation, reducing long-term costs. First calculate furnace heat loss; if insulation is insufficient, consider increasing CFB thickness ( 10%) reducing furnace temperature for optimization.
Old Wang’s Industry Observations
CFB’s application in furnaces often underestimates thermal expansion compatibility. Many factories replace traditional refractory bricks with CFB without considering that CFB’s thermal expansion coefficient (1.5×10⁻⁵/°C) is lower than that of rigid refractory bricks (2.0×10⁻⁵/°C), but thermal stress must still be considered. Leave 1 mm gap between CFB and furnace body to prevent cracking due to thermal stress.
