Quartz Ramming Mass for Induction Furnace Lining

Quartz Ramming Mass for Induction Furnace Lining
Old Master Wang heard that a steel group used quartz ramming mass for the lining of an induction furnace, but the lining lasted only half a year before large-scale crystallization cracks appeared and severe wear occurred. This really made me confused! Quartz ramming mass in induction furnaces is not as stable as in cement kilns. When selecting, the following points must be considered:
-
Temperature Distribution and Thermal Stress
Induction furnaces have uneven temperature distribution, with large temperature differences between the high-temperature zone (electrode area) and the low-temperature zone (furnace bottom). Quartz ramming mass has a high coefficient of thermal expansion (up to 3.5×10⁻⁶/℃), which easily causes cracks under high temperatures. It is recommended to use low thermal expansion coefficient ramming mass (≤3.5×10⁻⁶/℃) and low-cement content (≤10%) binder, reducing thermal stress damage. In practice, high-alumina quartz ramming mass (Al₂O₃≥25%) can effectively suppress crystallization cracks. -
Electromagnetic Coupling and Electrode Wear
The electrode area in induction furnaces is subjected to strong electromagnetic action, and although the hardness of quartz ramming mass (Mohs hardness 6-7) is moderate, prolonged wear can form “soft zones,” accelerating localized burning. It is recommended to use high-hardness (≥7.5) mullite ramming mass for reinforcement in the electrode area or quartz-mullite composite ramming mass to balance wear resistance and heat resistance. -
Field Experience: Moisture and Bond Strength
I have seen cases where quartz ramming mass was soaked in water during installation, leading to “explosion” under high temperatures and direct lining failure. This indicates that quartz ramming mass has a high drying shrinkage rate (≥0.5%), so moisture content must be strictly controlled (≤1.5%) during installation, and fast-setting binders should be used to ensure early strength. In practice, using low-moisture (≤1%) quartz ramming mass with high-strength (≥15MPa) cement-based binders significantly improves lining lifespan. -
Factory Implementation: Specific Recommendations
For induction furnaces, the following material selection is recommended:
- Main area: Use high-alumina quartz ramming mass (Al₂O₃≥25%, thermal expansion ≤3.5×10⁻⁶/℃), with a thickness of 150-200mm to reduce thermal stress.
- Electrode reinforcement: Use mullite ramming mass (Al₂O₃≥90%, hardness ≥8) in the electrode area, with a thickness of 200-250mm to ensure wear resistance.
- Furnace bottom area: Use low-moisture (≤1%) quartz ramming mass with high-strength binders to avoid moisture-induced explosions.
Old Master Wang’s Opinion: While quartz ramming mass has limitations in induction furnace linings, precise material selection and process control can significantly extend lining life. The key lies in thermal stress matching, wear reinforcement, and moisture management, which require first-line engineers to adjust on-site. Without these, even the best materials will “fly away.”
