Why cordierite phase content matters more than alumina value

A kiln shelf can look reassuring on a specification sheet and still be the wrong buy for repeated tile firing. If I had to choose between a cordierite phase measurement and an Al₂O₃ value alone, I’d pay closer attention to the phase measurement. Al₂O₃ tells me something about chemical composition; it does not, by itself, tell me how much of the finished kiln furniture is actually cordierite.

That distinction matters because cordierite is the phase valued here for low thermal expansion and resistance to thermal shock. Tile-sintering shelves and supports carry a load while going through repeated heating and cooling. A chemistry figure may help describe the material, but it cannot stand in for a measure of the phase that contributes to its behavior in that cycle. I would not reject the Al₂O₃ number—I just would not let it answer a question it cannot answer on its own.

The purchasing trap is easy to understand. A lower-priced shelf may look attractive when the comparison stops at the invoice. But reducing cordierite phase content to cut cost can shorten the number of usable cycles, leading to more frequent replacement. The practical comparison is not simply price per shelf; it is whether the shelf holds up through the service expected of it. When asking a supplier about Al₂O₃, I’d also ask how the cordierite phase proportion is assessed rather than treating the two figures as interchangeable.

Phase content is not a free pass to ignore operating conditions. Long-term use above 1250°C can accelerate cordierite phase decomposition, so a shelf chosen for tile firing still needs to suit the kiln’s actual temperature. Handling matters, too: a hard, localized impact can leave a hidden crack that grows under repeated thermal shock. If a shelf fails early, I’d want to consider temperature and handling alongside material selection.

My rule of thumb is simple: use Al₂O₃ as one piece of information, not as the headline verdict. For cordierite kiln furniture, the more useful question is whether the finished shelf has the cordierite phase content—and the operating conditions—to deliver a dependable service life.
